How to make a Top 32 drift bracket

A Top 32 bracket turns qualifying results into a clear path to the final. Here is how to seed it, handle byes and run it live.

Updated October 2026

Key takeaway

Seed by qualifying rank so 1 meets 32, keep the top seeds apart until late rounds, and publish one live bracket everyone follows.

What a Top 32 bracket is

A Top 32 is a single-elimination bracket for the 32 best qualifiers. Every battle has a winner who advances and a loser who is out, so the field halves each round until two drivers meet in the final.

RoundDriversBattles
Top 323216
Top 16168
Top 884
Semifinals42
Third-place battle2 semifinal losers1
Final21

That's 32 battles in total, including the third-place battle, before counting any One More Time runs. Plan your schedule around it.

Seed it from qualifying

The bracket is built from the qualifying order after tiebreakers: the top qualifier is seed 1, the 32nd is seed 32. Seeds are placed so the strongest qualifiers can only meet late, and seed 1 always faces seed 32. Drift Masters, for example, pairs its first qualifier with its 32nd.

These are the standard first-round pairings, in bracket order from top to bottom:

Top halfBottom half
1 vs 322 vs 31
16 vs 1715 vs 18
8 vs 257 vs 26
9 vs 2410 vs 23
4 vs 293 vs 30
13 vs 2014 vs 19
5 vs 286 vs 27
12 vs 2111 vs 22

With this order, seeds 1 and 2 can only meet in the final, and the top four can only meet in the semifinals. In most brackets the higher seed leads the first run of each battle; that's EFVD's default too.

When fewer than 32 drivers qualify

If only 28 drivers have a valid qualifying score, the four missing places become byes: seeds 1 to 4 advance to the Top 16 without a battle, because their opponents (seeds 29 to 32) don't exist. Byes always go to the top seeds, as a reward for qualifying well.

With far fewer drivers, a Top 16 is usually better than a Top 32 full of byes. Decide your cutoff rule before the event and publish it.

Only drivers with at least one valid qualifying score should enter the bracket. Settle ties for the last place with your published qualifying tiebreakers, not on the spot.

The third-place battle

The two semifinal losers race a normal battle for third. The winner takes the last podium spot and the other driver finishes fourth. Drift Masters and EFVD both run one. If you skip it, say in your rules how third place is decided.

Run it live in Challonge

Challonge is a free online bracket tool many drift competitions use, because drivers, staff and viewers can all follow one live link.

  1. Create a single elimination tournament and give it a clear name.
  2. Add participants in qualifying order. Challonge seeds them by their position in the list, so your top qualifier goes first.
  3. Turn on the third-place match option if you run one.
  4. Check the first-round pairings against your qualifying results before you start.
  5. Share the public bracket link in Discord, and add it to your stream if you can.
  6. Report each battle result as soon as the judges decide.

Updating the bracket by hand during a live show is easy to get wrong. Event Toolkit's Live Judging records judge votes in a Google Sheet and updates your Challonge bracket automatically.

Publish it the right way

  • One official source: post the bracket in your event Discord and treat it as the reference, even if the stream shows it too.
  • Lock it: say when the bracket is final, and how withdrawals are handled after that.
  • Show the order: drivers need to know when their battle is coming so they're ready at the start line.

Frequently asked questions

How many battles are in a Top 32 drift bracket?
31 elimination battles plus a third-place battle, so 32 in total, before any One More Time runs.
Who does seed 1 face in a Top 32?
Seed 32. Standard seeding pairs the highest and lowest qualifiers in the first round, then 16 with 17, 8 with 25 and so on.
What happens if fewer than 32 drivers qualify?
The top seeds get byes into the Top 16, one for each missing driver. With far fewer drivers, run a Top 16 instead.
Can Challonge run a drift bracket?
Yes. Use a single elimination tournament, add drivers in qualifying order so seeding is correct, and enable the third-place match if you run one.
